The magnificent main edifice of the College, an object of envy for many visitors, has housed the department on its first floor of hospital block of TSM Medical College.

The department of general surgery is mainstay of any hospital/Medical College. General Surgery of TSM Medical College is a fully functioning department, working all seven days of the week (24/7), with eminent faculty being the back bone of the department.

Over the period, the Faculty has changed from a pure General surgery team to a mix of General and Super-specialist surgeons, thus widening the profile and to the ultimate betterment of the Department.

The Department has been presently tasked to treat the surgical cases coming to OPD and in-patient or in the emergency room which is covered 24/7.

The additional task of teaching the undergraduates will start subsequently with the admission of undergraduate’s wef August 2016 and establishment of the Graduate Wing of the College.

In the department of general surgery we follow international standards, evidence based surgery, and ethics whenever we plan our surgeries. There is always a drive towards improvement and excellent patient care, and this motive is passed down through every member of the department.

We have a well equipped seminar room with audio – visual equipment with a seating capacity of 50.

The faculty of the department, apart from routine general surgical work including oesophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and the thyroid gland, regularly perform basic & advanced Laparoscopic surgery and Onco-surgery. There is a senior and an experienced onco-surgeon available as HOD Surgery.

The Department has OPD on all working days.

Emergency Services

The emergency surgical team works round the clock (24 Hours) and attends to both Surgical and Trauma emergencies to the poor and needy. This includes a wide variety of poly-trauma, and surgical diseases like GI bleed, Intestinal Obstruction, Peritonitis, pancreatitis which are managed by the rapid responder team of the institute with prompt resuscitation and support.

The duty surgical team performs major emergency surgeries on the patients in the emergency operation theatre, adjoining the Accident and Emergency Unit.

Treatment is offered for:

I. Cancer lesions:

  1. Cancer surgery of head face neck such as parotid gland, thyroid, tongue, cheek, floor of mouth, sub mandibular gland, para thyroid and radical neck dissection.
  2. Chest wall & thorax: All breast cancer surgery, thymic tumours, and axillary mass dissection.
  3. Abdomino–Pelvic Cancer Surgery: Stomach, Pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, small intestine, colon, rectum and anal canal.
  4. Extremity Cancer: Squamous cell cancer, malignant melanoma, soft tissue sarcoma.

II. Non Cancerous lesions:

  1. Oral cavity, salivary glands, thyroid, lymph node, parathyroid and soft tissue lesions.
  2. Chest wall lesions, all benign breast lesions, axillary lesions.
  3. Thoracic empyema, decortication, etc.
  4. Abdomino–pelvic – (Open/laparoscopic).

All operation on stomach, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum, anal canal and operation for GERD, Abdominal wall hernias, hydrocele, haemorrhoids and perianal lesions.

III. Peripheral lesions:

  1. Soft tissue lesions such as Lipoma, sebaceous cyst, skin grafting, etc.
  2. Surgery for varicose veins.
  3. Cellulitis, abscess, ulcers, diabetic foot, amputation for extremity gangrene, necrotizing fascitis.
